Discover more about Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery

The Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery, located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Paphos, stands as a testament to Cyprus's rich religious and cultural heritage. Founded in 1152 by the monk Ignatios, the monastery owes its existence to the discovery of a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Legend says that the icon was painted by the Apostle Luke and was cast into the sea to save it from iconoclasts, eventually washing ashore near Paphos. The monastery's present structure dates back to 1770 and showcases traditional Byzantine architecture. The main church is adorned with frescoes and houses a collection of religious books and artifacts, including the silver- and gold-plated icon of the Virgin Mary. Visitors can explore the monastery's courtyards, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Troodos Mountains. Beyond its religious significance, Chrysoroyiatissa Monastery is also known for its winery, established in the 1980s. Using traditional methods, the monks produce a variety of wines from the monastery's own vineyards. Visitors can sample these wines and purchase bottles from the monastery shop. Celebrations are held each year on August 15 in honor of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across the island.
