Gecitkoy Goleti: A Tranquil Reservoir

Gecitkoy Goleti, or Gecitkoy Dam, offers a tranquil retreat from the busy coastal towns of Northern Cyprus. Located near the village of Karşıyaka, this reservoir is surrounded by picturesque hills and lush vegetation, creating a stunning backdrop for relaxation and recreation. Originally built as the Dağdere Dam in 1989 with a capacity of 1,800,000 m3, Gecitkoy Goleti underwent significant expansion between 2012 and 2014. As part of the Northern Cyprus Water Supply Project, an undersea pipeline was constructed to transport water from the Alaköprü Dam in Turkey, increasing the reservoir's capacity to 35,000,000 m3. Today, it serves as a crucial water source for the region, supplying water to Girne and other areas. Beyond its functional purpose, Gecitkoy Goleti has become a haven for nature enthusiasts. Birdwatchers can spot diverse avian species, including migratory birds. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding hills, offering panoramic views of the reservoir and countryside. The nearby village of Karşıyaka offers a glimpse into local Cypriot culture.
