Discover more about Petrin Tower

The Petřín Lookout Tower, or Petřínská rozhledna, is a prominent landmark on Petřín Hill in Prague. Constructed in 1891 for the Jubilee Exhibition, it was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris and stands as a miniature version, roughly at a 1:5 ratio. The tower is 63.5 meters (208 feet) tall and while shorter than its Parisian inspiration, its elevated position on Petřín Hill provides comparable panoramic views of Prague. The tower's construction was initiated by the Czech Tourist Club after members visited the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889. They were so impressed by the Eiffel Tower that they decided to create a similar landmark for Prague. The structure consists of an octagonal steel lattice, using 175 tons of iron, with its eight arms anchored in massive stone blocks. Visitors can ascend the tower via 299 steps or use the elevator installed in 1999. From the top, one can see not only the entirety of Prague but also, in clear weather, much of Bohemia. Over the years, the Petřín Lookout Tower has served various purposes. Initially, it functioned as both an observation tower and a transmission tower. During World War II, the Germans used it to jam Czech resistance radio signals. It served as Prague's television signal provider until the Žižkov Television Tower opened in 1992. The tower has undergone several renovations, including the installation of a modern elevator and the creation of a wheelchair-accessible gallery. Today, the Petřín Lookout Tower remains a major tourist attraction, offering stunning views and a glimpse into Prague's history.
