Discover more about Vyšehrad

Vyšehrad, perched atop a hill overlooking the Vltava River, is an ancient fortification with a rich history dating back to the 10th century. Meaning 'Upper Castle,' it was one of the first settlements in Prague and served as the seat of Czech dukes and kings. Legend says that Princess Libuše, known for prophesying the future of Prague, founded Vyšehrad. For two centuries, Vyšehrad was a royal residence until the seat of power moved to Prague Castle in the 12th century. Charles IV, a Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, renovated the fortifications in the 14th century, recognizing Vyšehrad as a symbol of ancient Czech history. The fortress later served as a military training center under the Habsburg Monarchy. Today, Vyšehrad offers visitors a peaceful escape with its expansive park, architectural treasures, and panoramic views. Key attractions include the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, known for its neo-Gothic style and the final resting place of St. Valentine ; the Vyšehrad Cemetery, the final resting place of many famous Czech figures ; and the Rotunda of St. Martin, Prague's oldest rotunda. Visitors can explore the casemates, underground passages within the ramparts, and enjoy cultural events at the Old Burgrave's House and the Open Air Theatre.
