Cloak Bridge: A Krumlovian Icon

An iconic bridge in Český Krumlov offering panoramic views and a unique glimpse into the town's rich history and architecture.

4.8

The Cloak Bridge (Plášťový most in Czech) is an iconic feature of the Český Krumlov Castle complex, serving as a vital link between the castle's courtyards. Rising approximately 40 meters in height and stretching 30 meters in length, this impressive structure spans a deep ravine, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town. Originally constructed as a wooden drawbridge in the 15th century, the bridge underwent several transformations. In the 17th century, Johann Christian I von Eggenberg commissioned a new wooden bridge to improve access to the Castle Gardens. The covered corridors were added later, with the upper corridor completed in 1706 and the lower passage in 1707. The bridge assumed its current form in 1777 and has been beautifully preserved since then. The bridge has five tiers, with the lower part resembling a Roman aqueduct. The lower level connects the Masquerade Hall with the Baroque Theatre, while the upper gallery provided a passage for noble residents to access the castle gardens. Although it was once possible to cross the bridge and continue to the Minorite Monastery, this is no longer possible. Today, the bridge is freely accessible and offers stunning views of the historic center.
