Discover more about The State Chateau of Hluboká

The State Chateau of Hluboká, often hailed as one of the most beautiful castles in the Czech Republic, boasts a rich history and stunning architecture. Originally built as a royal fortress in the 13th century by King Přemysl Otakar II, it served as a strategic guard castle. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of various noble families, including the Pernštejns and the Lords of Hradec. The most significant transformation occurred in the 19th century when the Schwarzenberg family, who owned the estate from 1661 to 1939, reconstructed the chateau in the Romantic neo-Gothic style. Inspired by their travels to England and particularly influenced by Windsor Castle, Prince Jan Adolf II of Schwarzenberg and his wife Princess Eleonora oversaw the extensive redesign. The result is the magnificent white castle seen today, complete with 140 chambers, eleven towers, and sprawling English-style gardens. Visitors can explore the castle's opulent interiors, adorned with intricate wood carvings, elegant furniture, and collections of paintings, porcelain, and historical arms. Highlights include the grand dining rooms, the library, and the armory, as well as the castle kitchen with its original 20th-century equipment. The surrounding gardens offer breathtaking views and charming features like golden pillars, statues, and a labyrinth.
