Discover more about Samson fountain

The Samson Fountain, or Samsonova kašna, stands as a grand symbol of České Budějovice, located in the heart of Přemysl Otakar II Square. Built between 1721 and 1727, this Baroque fountain is one of the largest in the Czech Republic, with a diameter of 17 meters. It was created as part of the city's renovation after the Thirty Years' War, intended to supply water to the city's side streets. The fountain features a large stone basin from which a prismatic pedestal rises. This pedestal is adorned with four gargoyles and four atlantes, who support a large, round bowl. Atop this bowl stands a sculpture of the biblical Samson taming a lion, symbolizing strength and courage. The statue faces northward towards Prague. The fountain's design was conceived by Jesuit F. Baugaut of Jindřichův Hradec, while the sculptures are the work of J. Dietrich. The construction process was challenging, particularly the transportation of the large shell from a quarry near Trhové Sviny, requiring the widening of the Vienna Gate and the use of 62 horses. In 1990, the original sculptures were replaced with replicas, and the originals are now preserved in the České Budějovice town hall. The fountain replaced an old pillory in the town square. The fountain was fed with water from the Vltava river, with a water tower built for this purpose. Today, the Samson Fountain remains a focal point for community events and a testament to the city's rich history and artistic heritage.
