    Discover more about John's Castle

John's Castle (Janův hrad) is a captivating architectural folly nestled in the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Czech Republic. Constructed between 1801 and 1810 by the Liechtenstein family, this 'castle' is actually a carefully designed imitation of a medieval ruin. Its purpose was purely aesthetic, intended to enhance the romantic atmosphere of the surrounding parkland. The castle's design incorporates four corner towers, each with a unique ground plan, connected by perimeter walls featuring first-floor ramparts. A mansion closes off the fourth side of the courtyard, housing the Knight's Hall, once used for feasts and hunting banquets. The architect, Joseph Hardtmuth, paid meticulous attention to detail, striving to create a realistic imitation of a genuine castle ruin. Stones were sourced from Pálava and the nearby Great Moravian settlement of Pohansko. Visitors can explore the castle's towers and ramparts, imagining life in a bygone era. The south tower features a lookout point offering panoramic views. The surrounding area provides hiking trails through the floodplain forest, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature. John's Castle is a popular destination, offering a blend of historical intrigue and scenic beauty within a UNESCO-protected landscape. It stands as a testament to the romantic sensibilities of the early 19th century and the Liechtenstein family's vision for their estate.
