Discover more about Pavlov Archaeological Park

The Pavlov Archaeological Park offers a captivating journey into the Paleolithic era, showcasing the life and culture of mammoth hunters who inhabited this region over 25,000 years ago. Located on the outskirts of the wine village of Pavlov in the South Moravian Region, the park stands on a site of major archaeological significance. The museum's unique architecture, designed to blend with the natural environment, is an attraction in itself. The majority of the structure is located underground, with white concrete towers that resemble limestone outcrops emerging from the earth. This design not only minimizes the impact on the protected landscape but also evokes the feeling of entering a cave, connecting visitors to the ancient world beneath their feet. Inside, the park features a range of exhibits that combine traditional displays with modern audiovisual technology. Visitors can view stone and bone tools, artwork, and skeletal remains of early modern humans, offering a glimpse into the daily lives, hunting techniques, and spiritual beliefs of these ancient people. One of the highlights is the 'in situ' exposition, which incorporates the skeletal remains of mammoths discovered on the site directly into the museum building. The park also displays a replica of the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, the oldest known ceramic sculpture in the world. Beyond the museum building, a 2-mile archaeological trail leads visitors to other significant sites in the vicinity, including the locations of mammoth hunter settlements and the discovery sites of the Dolní Věstonice Venus and the Dolní Věstonice triple tomb. The trail offers a chance to explore the broader landscape and appreciate the rich history of the area.
