Discover more about Labyrinth Under the Vegetable Market

The Labyrinth Under the Vegetable Market invites you to explore the hidden depths beneath one of Brno's oldest squares. This unique system of medieval cellars and passageways, dating back to the 13th century, lies six to eight meters below the surface. Originally, these spaces were used by merchants in the Vegetable Market (formerly known as the Upper Market) to store food, wine, and beer, taking advantage of the cool underground atmosphere. The cellars also served as shelters during times of war. Over time, the labyrinth remained largely a mystery, with the passages not fully connected until a major reconstruction in 2009. The site opened to the public in 2011 and has since become a popular attraction. During your visit, you'll discover how food and beverages were stored, learn about the methods used to light the tunnels, and view a collection of archaeological finds. Replicas of a pillory and a cage of fools evoke the darker aspects of life in centuries past, offering insights into the punishments meted out to dishonest craftsmen and traders. The tour also showcases an alchemist's laboratory, highlighting the contributions of doctors, pharmacists, and physicists who brought fame to Brno throughout Europe.
