Kašperk Castle: Bohemia's Highest Royal Fortress

Kašperk Castle, also known as Karlsberg, stands as a testament to medieval Bohemia's strategic importance. Established by King Charles IV, the castle served multiple crucial roles: safeguarding the border with Bavaria, protecting the region's valuable gold deposits, and ensuring the security of the Golden Path, a vital trade artery. At 886 meters (2,907 feet) above sea level, Kašperk is Bohemia's highest royal castle, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Unlike many castles that were rebuilt over centuries, Kašperk retains its original 14th-century character, providing an authentic glimpse into its past. The castle complex features an oblong hall and residential towers encircled by ramparts, reflecting its original design. Though a royal castle, Kašperk was typically administered by the gentry, who were loyal to the crown. These castellans managed the castle and its surrounding estates. Over the centuries, Kašperk has been owned by various influential figures, including Jan Očko of Vlašim and the Sternberg family. In 1616, the castle was sold to the town of Kašperské Hory, which has owned it ever since. Visitors can explore the castle's interior, which hosts exhibitions detailing its history and the lives of its inhabitants. The nearby remains of Pustý hrádek, an outer fortification, offer stunning views of the Bohemian Forest.
