The peat bog itself is part of a larger peatland spanning 111.33 hectares, though the protected natural monument covers only a portion of this area. Buková Slať's origins are linked to historical peat extraction, which has left its mark on the landscape. Drainage ditches and peat belts are testaments to this past activity. However, despite these alterations, the area remains a valuable habitat for various plant and animal species. Visitors can explore the bog via boardwalks, providing an immersive experience into this unique environment. The bog's history is intertwined with the Schwarzenberg family, who initiated protection efforts as early as 1923. Today, Buková Slať is part of the Šumava National Park's first zone, ensuring its continued preservation.
