Discover more about Sušice Museum of Šumava

Founded in 1880 as the first museum in the Šumava region, the Šumava Museum in Sušice provides a comprehensive look at the area's past. Originally conceived by local teacher Josef Holík, the museum's collections were initially housed in the Town Hall before moving to its current location in the Voprchovský House on Svobody Square. This Renaissance building, with its Gothic foundations, has been home to the museum since 1933. The museum's exhibits cover a range of topics, including the history of the town and its surroundings, the glass industry of the Šumava region, and the match-making industry that was once a significant part of Sušice's economy. Visitors can also explore archaeological finds, a pewter treasure from the 16th and 17th centuries, and a Capuchin library with old prints. A highlight is the Sušice Mechanical Christmas Crib, one of the largest in the Czech Republic, depicting traditional life in the town and region with moving figures and detailed buildings. The museum also showcases artifacts from the original local settlement, Slavonic pottery from the 10th century, and relics of gold panning in the Sušice area. The Bruno Schreiber's Glass Collection features Czech glass from the Šumava region from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. The museum's focus shifted from rural to urban life, townspeople, guilds, societies, crafts, and industry under Kajetán Turek’s leadership.
