Discover more about Jezerní slať

Jezerní Slať, also known as Kvildská Slať, is a remarkable raised bog situated on the Šumava plateau between the villages of Kvilda and Horská Kvilda. This unique environment, part of the Šumava National Park's first zone, showcases a distinctive landscape shaped by high rainfall and low temperatures. The bog's formation is a result of the area's impermeable bedrock and significant precipitation, leading to the accumulation of peat over centuries. The average depth of the peat layer is around 2.5 meters, with the thickest part reaching 7.6 meters. Visitors can observe various peat bog plants, such as dwarf pines, stunted birches, and dwarf spruces. The area is also home to diverse invertebrate species like spiders, dragonflies and butterflies, as well as vertebrates such as the common viper and viviparous lizard. A wooden boardwalk trail, approximately 350 meters long, provides access to the heart of the bog, leading from a small parking area near the Kvilda – Horská Kvilda road. A 7-meter high observation tower offers panoramic views of the peat bog and the surrounding forested landscape, including the peak of Sokol. Jezerní Slať is known as one of the coldest places in the Czech Republic, with recorded temperatures dropping below freezing even in summer. The lowest recorded temperature was -41.6°C in 1987.
