Discover more about Pajrek Castle

Pajrek Castle, or what remains of it, sits about 2.5 km from the town of Nýrsko in the Klatovy district. Built in the 14th century, the castle's primary role was to safeguard the country path leading into Bavaria. The name 'Pajrek' itself has German origins, 'Baiereck,' loosely translating to 'castle on the Bavarian border'. Throughout its history, Pajrek Castle had a succession of owners, including figures like Něpr z Pajreku and Jan Koc from Dobrše. One notable owner, Jindřich Kostomlatský, gained notoriety for using the castle as a haven for unsavory characters, which ultimately led to his execution in Prague in 1520. Despite a later attempt at restoration in 1918 by the Hohenzollern family, the castle was ultimately abandoned. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, including the remains of a square tower, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The site is accessible via hiking trails, offering a blend of historical exploration and outdoor adventure. Trenches carved into the rock, once part of the castle's defenses, can still be seen.
