Walking

From the center of Nýrsko, the walk to Pajrek Castle is approximately 30 minutes. Head southeast on the road signposted Nýrsko 22, following signs towards the castle. The path is well-marked and offers a pleasant walk through the countryside. There are no entrance fees or tolls to access the castle ruins.

Public Transport

Take a train or bus to Nýrsko. From the Nýrsko bus or train station, it's about a 15-minute walk to the castle. Head southeast on Nýrsko 22 road, following the signs toward Pajrek Castle. Bus or train fares from nearby Klatovy typically cost around 30-50 CZK. Nýrsko is located on the railway line Prague–Plzeň–Železná Ruda, providing a direct connection to Prague.

Car

From Klatovy, head east on the D5 motorway, then take exit 123 towards Nýrsko. Continue until you reach Nýrsko. The castle is located at Nýrsko 22, 340 22 Nýrsko, approximately 1 km from the center of Nýrsko. Follow the signs to Pajrek Castle. Parking is available near the castle, free of charge.

Overview

Pajrek Castle, or what remains of it, sits about 2.5 km from the town of Nýrsko in the Klatovy district. Built in the 14th century, the castle's primary role was to safeguard the country path leading into Bavaria. The name 'Pajrek' itself has German origins, 'Baiereck,' loosely translating to 'castle on the Bavarian border'.Throughout its history, Pajrek Castle had a succession of owners, including figures like Něpr z Pajreku and Jan Koc from Dobrše. One notable owner, Jindřich Kostomlatský, gained notoriety for using the castle as a haven for unsavory characters, which ultimately led to his execution in Prague in 1520. Despite a later attempt at restoration in 1918 by the Hohenzollern family, the castle was ultimately abandoned.Today, visitors can explore the ruins, including the remains of a square tower, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The site is accessible via hiking trails, offering a blend of historical exploration and outdoor adventure. Trenches carved into the rock, once part of the castle's defenses, can still be seen.
