Originally founded as part of a Cistercian monastery after 1250, the church underwent significant reconstruction around 1710 under Abbot Václav Vejmluva, with architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel transforming it into a unique Baroque-Gothic masterpiece. The basilica's design showcases a harmonious blend of styles. The wall painting in the baptismal chapel depicts Pope Pius II allowing Žďár abbots to use pontifical regalia in 1462. Today, the Basilica stands as the second-longest church in Moravia, a testament to its enduring legacy. In 2009, it was elevated to the honor of a Minor Basilica.
