Discover more about Berlova vápenka Třemošnice

Berlova vápenka, also known as Vápenka Závratec, stands as a valuable testament to the industrial heritage of the Třemošnice region. This former lime production facility, dating back to the late 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of lime production in the Železné hory. The lime kiln's construction began in 1880, with production starting shortly thereafter. In 1890, David Berl bought the kiln and expanded it in 1893. A unique feature was the 5-kilometer-long cable car system from Prachovice, used to transport the limestone. This cable car system was considered a technical marvel in its time, the only one of its kind in Austria-Hungary. Production continued until 1960 when operations ceased. After falling into disrepair, the town of Třemošnice took ownership and reconstructed the site between 2009 and 2010. Today, Berlova vápenka functions as a museum dedicated to the history of lime production in the Iron Mountains. The museum features exhibits detailing the history of lime production, including the original kiln. Visitors can explore the interior of the kiln and learn about the raw materials and processes involved in creating lime. The exhibits are divided into four parts: the beginnings of lime production in the Železné hory, the history of Berlova vápenka, the history of the Prachovice lime kiln, and information about limestone.
