Discover more about Natural park Heřmanův Městec

Natural Park Heřmanův Městec, established in 1996, spans 341 hectares on the eastern and southeastern fringes of the town, offering a diverse landscape for recreation and nature appreciation. The park is composed of three main sections: the Castle Park (Zámecký park), the Palác Forest Park (Lesopark Palác), and the Bažantnice area. The Castle Park, featuring an arboretum covering 42.69 hectares, is located south of the late Baroque Heřmanův Městec Castle and is open to the public. Count Jan Václav Špork established the nature landscape park in 1784, coinciding with the castle's reconstruction. The park attained its current form in the 1820s. During World War II, it briefly served as a military airfield. The Palác Forest Park forms the largest part of the natural park, directly adjacent to the Castle Park. It consists of a former park forest with enclaves of orchards. The park's highest point stands at 382 meters above sea level. Heřmanův Městec itself has a rich history, dating back to its founding around 1280 on a trade route from Prague to Moravia. The town was historically significant due to its location and large Jewish community, which made it the region's economic center. The Kinsky family, who acquired the town in 1828, significantly contributed to its development by building a hospital, an orphanage, and expanding the castle and its park.
