Discover more about Bělá Castle

Bělá Castle, or rather its ruins, stand as a testament to the rich history of the Plzeň Region in the Czech Republic. Located in the municipality of Dolní Bělá, the castle's story began between 1313 and 1315 when it was constructed by Racek, a member of the influential Hroznata family. The village of Dolní Bělá was first mentioned in writing in 1318. Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle changed hands several times, even being confiscated from Volf of Gutštejn in 1509 due to his activities as a robber baron. Towards the end of the 16th century, under the ownership of the Markvarts of Hrádek family, the heavily fortified castle was rebuilt into a chateau. Kryštof Harant, a notable historical figure, even stayed at the castle before his journey to the Holy Land. In 1757, the Cistercian monastery of Plasy acquired Bělá Castle. However, after Emperor Joseph II abolished religious orders, the Religious Fund managed the property. Around 1785, locals were permitted to dismantle the castle and use its stones for their own homes, leading to its ruinous state. Today, visitors can wander through the remains of Bělá Castle, imagining the lives and events that unfolded within its walls while enjoying the surrounding landscape. The area is also known for its hiking trails through forests and hills, catering to both avid hikers and those who enjoy leisurely strolls.
