Discover more about Malochova skalka

Malochova Skalka, declared a protected area in 1970, is a natural monument located on the left bank of the Berounka River near Druztová, northeast of Plzeň. The area, spanning approximately 2 hectares, features a rocky slope with a variety of thermophilic plants. The Berounka River canyon reaches depths of about 35 meters, adding to the dramatic geological landscape. The site is named after František Maloch (1862-1940), a Plzeň botanist and teacher who extensively studied the flora of the Plzeň region. A memorial plaque dedicated to Maloch has been maintained at the Skalka since 1951. The area's geological composition includes spilites, sandstones, and shales. These diverse geological features support various soil types and plant communities, including natural scree forests and oak-hornbeam groves. Malochova Skalka is home to rare plant species, including *Sesleria caerulea*, *Allium senescens subsp. montanum*, and *Polygala chamaebuxus*. Animal species such as the spotted salamander also thrive here. Visitors can enjoy hiking and cycling trails, including the yellow-marked tourist path, the oldest in the Plzeň area. The Zábělá nature trail also provides educational opportunities. The site is open year-round with no entrance fee, though donations for conservation are welcomed.
