Transmitter Krašov: A Unique Landmark and Sundial

The Krašov Transmitter is more than just a functional broadcasting tower; it's a unique landmark that combines technology with a touch of whimsy. Located near the village of Bezvěrov in the Karlovy Vary Region, this towering structure serves as a facility for TV broadcasting. However, it's also known for being the largest sundial in the Czech Republic, and possibly the world.The transmitter features a 347.5-meter guyed mast, making it the second tallest structure in the Czech Republic. The original mast partially collapsed in 1979 due to freezing temperatures and damage from the 1968 Warsaw Pact intervention. The current mast was constructed between 1979 and 1981.What makes this transmitter truly special is its dual purpose as a giant sundial. The shadow cast by the tower acts as the gnomon, while large, three-meter-high Roman numerals are placed along the adjacent road to mark the hours between 10 AM and 2 PM. This ingenious idea was conceived by Václav Sidorjak, an amateur astronomer, who noticed the tower's long shadow while flying his motorized parachute. The sundial was inaugurated on March 20, 2018, the day of the vernal equinox.Bezvěrov is located in the Manětín region of the dark sky, an area known for excellent conditions for observing the night sky. The surrounding landscape is characterized by hills and forests, offering a peaceful environment.
