Driving
From Harrington, DE, head southwest on DE-14 W/Commerce Street. Continue for approximately 7 miles, then turn left onto Cattail Branch Road. Turn right onto High Stump Road, followed by a left onto Burrsville Road. Taber State Forest will be on your left. Note that some roads leading to the trailhead are dirt roads, but are generally well-maintained. Parking is free and available at the trailhead. Be aware of hunting seasons.

From Wilmington, DE, take the DART First State bus Route 301 to Delaware State University in Dover. From there, transfer to a local taxi service or ride-sharing service for the approximately 30-minute drive to Taber State Forest. Taxi/ride-share costs approximately $40-$50. Taber State Forest, the smallest of Delaware's state forests, provides a serene and secluded natural environment in southwestern Kent County. Managed mainly for timber production and wildlife habitat, the forest offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of Delaware's landscape.
The forest's history dates back to 1984 when the Delaware Forest Service acquired the 350-acre Saulsbury Farm. The forest also includes the historic Smith School House, a one-teacher school that once served an average of 23 students. Notably, a portion of the forest extends into Maryland.
Today, Taber State Forest is a primitive use facility popular for hunting, hiking, and wildlife observation. With three miles of trails winding through loblolly pine and mixed upland hardwoods, visitors can explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The Saulsbury family burial grave, containing a memorial to Gove Saulsbury, the 41st governor of Delaware, is also located within the forest.
While exploring, be mindful of hunting seasons and consider wearing bright colors. Signage is minimal, so a compass or GPS may be helpful.
