Discover more about James Farm Ecological Preserve

The James Farm Ecological Preserve is a 150-acre gem on the Indian River Bay in Ocean View, Delaware, a short drive from Bethany Beach. This natural oasis, managed by the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a variety of ecosystems. The land was gifted to Sussex County in 1992 by Mary Lighthipe, a descendant of the James family, who had farmed the land for generations. Her gift, in memory of her son Harold, came with the stipulation that the property be used for environmental education and recreation. Since 1998, the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays has worked to create and maintain the preserve. Visitors can explore over three miles of marked hiking trails, traverse a boardwalk beach crossing, and enjoy views from three observation platforms. The preserve boasts seven distinct habitats, from the salty flats of the low marsh to the shade of the maritime and hardwood forests, and finally, the sunshine of former farm fields. Birdwatchers will find the preserve an excellent location to spot various species, especially during spring and fall migrations. A freshwater wetland area has also been created, attracting deer, ducks, and other wildlife. The preserve is currently undergoing improvements to enhance its infrastructure and educational programs. These include a new education building, trail realignment, and expanded storage. The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset, offering a natural escape for all.
