Discover more about Ryves Holt House

The Ryves Holt House, located in the historic town of Lewes, Delaware, is a testament to the state's rich colonial past. Built around 1665, it is considered the oldest house in Delaware still standing on its original foundation. The house provides a tangible link to the early European settlers of the Delaware Valley, showcasing architectural influences from the Dutch, Swedish, and English. Initially, the house served as an inn, established by Philip Russell, offering lodging and provisions to travelers in the New World. In 1723, Ryves Holt, for whom the house is named, purchased the property. Holt was a prominent figure, serving as Naval Officer for the Port of Lewes and later as Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court. The house remained in the Holt family until 1792, when it was sold by Jacob Jones, a War of 1812 hero. The Ryves Holt House has witnessed centuries of Lewes's growth and change, surviving fires and even pirate raids. Today, the Lewes Historical Society operates the house as a museum and gift shop. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the house's history, its inhabitants, and Lewes's maritime heritage. The house also serves as the starting point for the Society's walking tours of Lewes.
