John Bell House: A Glimpse into Dover's Past

The John Bell House, situated in the heart of Dover's First State Heritage Park, stands as a tangible link to Delaware's rich past. Built in the mid-18th century, this modest building has played many roles throughout its existence. Originally, it served as an outbuilding to a tavern complex run by John Bell, a mariner from Philadelphia. It's believed John Bell II built the structure as a workshop. This makes it a rare surviving example of early Chesapeake and Delaware architecture and the oldest wooden-frame structure in Dover. Over the years, the John Bell House has been a hub of activity. By 1824, it housed Dover's post office and possibly a print shop, indicated by the discovery of movable printer's type during archaeological digs. Later, from the late 1860s into the 20th century, it was occupied by lawyers and realtors. The State of Delaware purchased the building in 2005 and meticulously restored it to its historic appearance in 2009-2010. Today, the John Bell House functions as the interpretive center for the First State Heritage Park. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing Dover's history and take thematic walking tours of the historic Green. The house provides a unique window into the lives of ordinary Delawareans and the events that shaped the First State.
