The Air Mobility Command Museum, located at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, is a unique institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of air transport and aerial refueling. Established in 1986, the museum evolved from a restoration project by members of the 512th Military Airlift Wing. Today, it features over 30 aircraft, ranging from vintage WWII planes to modern jet transports. The museum is housed in Hangar 1301, a historic site used for secret rocket development during World War II. This hangar, now on the National Register of Historic Places, provides a fitting backdrop for the exhibits. Inside, visitors can explore displays about airlift operations during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, as well as the Berlin Airlift. The outdoor ramp displays a diverse collection of aircraft, including the C-141 Starlifter and C-5A Galaxy, the latter being the plane that dropped a Minuteman missile in a 1974 test. Many aircraft are open for tours, allowing visitors to experience these historic machines firsthand. The museum also features flight simulators, including a C-141 simulator, and an air traffic control tower exhibit. The Air Mobility Command Museum is not just a display of aircraft; it's a tribute to the people and missions that have shaped the history of air mobility. With free admission and parking, it's an accessible and engaging experience for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and families alike.
