Curtis Mill Park: A Blend of History and Nature

Curtis Mill Park, located in Newark, Delaware, is a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The park occupies the site of the former Curtis Paper Mill, once the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States. The mill's history dates back to 1789 when Thomas Meeteer established a sawmill and paper mill. For over two centuries, the site produced high-quality paper, witnessing changes in ownership and playing a role in significant historical events, including supplying paper for the Japanese surrender documents in 1945. After the mill's closure in 1999, the City of Newark transformed the brownfield site into a public park, which opened in October 2014. Although the original smokestack was removed due to restoration costs, the park retains elements of its past, offering interpretive plaques that tell the story of the Curtis Paper Mill. Birdwatching is popular, with diverse species inhabiting the area. Fishing is permitted in the ponds.
