Ferry and short walk
Arrive by ferry to Marstal harbour from Ærøskøbing, a sailing that typically takes around 50–60 minutes and costs roughly 70–120 DKK per adult each way depending on season and ticket type. From the harbour, expect a level walk of about 10–15 minutes along town streets. The route is paved and generally suitable for wheeled luggage, but sidewalks can be narrow in places.
Bus from Ærøskøbing
If you land at Ærøskøbing by ferry, you can continue to Marstal on the island bus, which usually runs several times a day and takes about 25–35 minutes. On many departures the bus is free or very low cost, but schedules vary by season, so check the latest timetable at the ferry terminal. Buses are standard vehicles with limited space for bulky luggage and bicycles.
Bicycle across the island
For a more active approach, rent a bicycle in Ærøskøbing or Søby and ride across the island to Marstal. The journey from Ærøskøbing typically takes 60–90 minutes at an easy pace along gently undulating rural roads. Expect to pay in the region of 100–200 DKK per day for standard bike rental. Surfaces are mostly paved, but be prepared for headwinds and limited shelter in open stretches.
Car on the ferry
Travellers bringing a car can sail to Ærø with vehicle-friendly ferries from Fyn or Als, with crossings generally lasting 60–75 minutes and costing from roughly 300–600 DKK per car including passengers, depending on route and season. From the arrival harbour, the drive to Marstal takes about 25–40 minutes on two‑lane island roads. Parking near the hotel and harbour is usually straightforward but can be busier in July and August.
