Copenhagen Amber Museum
Copenhagen Amber Museum (House of Amber)
Copenhagen’s compact historic heart, where royal palaces, canals, gardens and pedestrian streets weave a walkable tapestry of Nordic history and everyday city life.
Indre By, literally “inner city”, is Copenhagen’s compact historic core, wrapped by lakes and harbour and dense with landmarks, spires and cobbled lanes. Here you move between royal palaces, medieval streets and broad pedestrian shopping arteries such as Strøget and Købmagergade, with Tivoli Gardens, Christiansborg Palace, Nyhavn and Rosenborg Castle all within easy walking distance. Cafés, design stores, museums and canalside promenades give the district a lively yet surprisingly relaxed, human-scale feel.

Metro from Copenhagen Central Station
From Copenhagen Central Station, take the M3 or M4 metro line to Kongens Nytorv or Gammel Strand; the ride takes about 5–8 minutes with trains every few minutes most of the day. A single-zone ticket within the city typically costs around 20–30 DKK and can be bought from machines or via mobile apps. Stations and trains are step-free with elevators, but some older streets in Indre By have cobblestones that may be less comfortable for wheelchairs or strollers.
Metro from Copenhagen Airport
From Copenhagen Airport, board the M2 metro line towards the city and ride about 15–20 minutes to Kongens Nytorv, on the eastern edge of Indre By. Trains usually run every 4–6 minutes during the day, and a ticket covering the airport to city zone is commonly in the 30–40 DKK range. The route is fully accessible, but airport crowds and luggage can make peak hours busier, so allow extra time then.
City bus into the inner city
Several city bus routes cross central Copenhagen and stop around Rådhuspladsen, Nørreport and other edges of Indre By, with typical journey times of 10–25 minutes from nearby districts depending on traffic. Standard inner-city bus fares are generally 20–30 DKK, using the same tickets and passes as the metro. Buses run frequently but can be slower in rush hour; expect standing room at busy times, and note that boarding is at the front with validators inside.
Cycling from nearby neighbourhoods
From central districts such as Vesterbro, Nørrebro or Østerbro, cycling into Indre By usually takes 10–20 minutes along dedicated bike lanes that feed directly into the inner city’s perimeter. Many visitors use public bike-share schemes, which often charge a small unlocking fee plus a per‑minute rate that adds up to roughly 15–40 DKK for a short ride. Within Indre By many streets are pedestrian-only, so be prepared to dismount and walk your bike where cycling is restricted.
