Haunstrup Brunkulslejer is a 235-hectare former brown coal mining area turned wild, undulating nature reserve just southwest of Herning. Today the scarred landscape has softened into a patchwork of pine and deciduous forest, sandy pits, heather, lakes and viewpoints, criss-crossed by marked hiking and mountain bike trails. With dog forest, simple campsites, shelters, fire pits and a forest playground, it is a low-key outdoor playground for walkers, families and nature lovers in central Jutland.
