Bella Center Copenhagen
Copenhagen’s powerhouse convention and exhibition centre, combining vast flexible halls, sleek Nordic design and direct metro access in the modern Ørestad district.
Scandinavia’s Flagship Convention Hub
Bella Center Copenhagen is a purpose-built convention and exhibition complex in the fast-growing Ørestad district on Amager, roughly midway between Copenhagen’s city centre and the international airport. Designed on a grand scale, it offers more than 65,000 square metres of event space within an indoor footprint that can host up to around 30,000 people at once. Despite its size, the site feels coherent rather than overwhelming, with clear zoning between halls, foyers, auditoriums and the connected AC Hotel Bella Sky. The surrounding neighbourhood underlines the venue’s contemporary character. Glass-and-steel offices, new residential towers and landscaped canals frame the centre, while protected green areas and the Royal Golf Center sit only a short walk away. A dedicated metro station next to the east entrance plugs the complex directly into the city’s transport grid, which is one reason it attracts so many international conferences. From Modest Origins to Modern Powerhouse
The name “Bella Center” comes from Bellahøj in northern Copenhagen, where the original exhibition site opened in the 1960s. As the city grew and event demands increased, the complex relocated in the 1970s to open land on Amager, close to what would later become Ørestad. Over the decades, expansions and refurbishments have steadily transformed it from an out-of-town fairground into a modern meetings hub wrapped into a dense new district. Development of the Ørestad area accelerated from the 1990s, bringing in ambitious urban planning and new transport infrastructure. A decisive step was the introduction of the M1 metro line in 2004, which placed a station directly beside the centre. More recently, the opening of the dramatically tilted Bella Sky hotel towers cemented the area’s skyline and provided hundreds of additional rooms and extra conference facilities attached to the venue.Vast Halls and Flexible Meeting Spaces
Inside, Bella Center is a grid of highly adaptable spaces. Huge multi-purpose halls labelled A through E can be configured for trade fairs, plenary sessions, gala dinners or immersive brand activations. Hall C and Hall D in particular are designed for large-scale experiences, accommodating thousands of delegates with generous ceiling heights, professional rigging options and robust technical infrastructure. Other halls introduce more natural light, indoor trees and mezzanine levels to break up the volume. Beyond the exhibition floors, a congress hall can be divided into separate sections, and several permanent auditoriums handle anything from keynote speeches to film screenings. More than forty dedicated meeting rooms, supplemented by temporary breakouts carved from flexible wall systems, allow organisers to run parallel tracks or workshops without losing a sense of flow. Foyers double as registration zones, networking areas or cocktail reception spaces, with direct access to catering points.On-Site Comforts and Working Practicalities
For visitors, day-to-day comfort has been built into the venue’s logistics. Wide concourses keep foot traffic moving smoothly, and clear signage helps you navigate from metro station to main entrance, and then on to halls, auditoriums or the hotel bridge. The complex is fully equipped with high-capacity Wi‑Fi, climate control, built-in audiovisual facilities and back-of-house services for exhibitors, such as loading docks and technical support. Catering varies from quick coffee bars and grab-and-go snack counters to larger food outlets that can scale up for peak congress days. The attached Bella Sky hotel brings additional restaurants, a sky bar with city views and wellness facilities, meaning many delegates can stay, meet and unwind without leaving the campus. Outside, there is extensive paid parking, plus easy pedestrian links toward shopping at Field’s mall or for a stroll into nearby nature areas.Experiencing Ørestad Around the Venue
Spending time at Bella Center also offers a window onto Copenhagen’s newest urban landscape. Between sessions, you can step outside for fresh air along canal-front promenades or find a quiet bench among newly planted trees and lawns. The contrast between sleek architecture and flat, open skies over Amager gives the area a distinctive, almost futuristic feel compared with the city’s historic core. With central Copenhagen only a short metro ride away, it is simple to balance intensive conference days with evenings in atmospheric neighbourhoods such as Indre By, Islands Brygge or Christianshavn. Yet many visitors appreciate that Ørestad remains calmer and more spacious, allowing them to refocus easily once they are back at the venue. For business travellers, Bella Center Copenhagen functions as a self-contained, well-oiled base that still feels connected to the broader city.Local tips
- Wear comfortable shoes: distances between halls, auditoriums and foyers can be long, especially during large fairs that use multiple sections of the complex.
- Make use of the Bella Center metro station for quick links to the city centre and airport; it is often faster and more predictable than travelling by taxi at busy times.
- If your event spans several days, consider staying at the adjacent Bella Sky hotel or nearby Ørestad hotels to minimise daily travel and maximise networking opportunities.
- Plan meal breaks outside peak lunch windows; food outlets handle large numbers well, but queues are shortest just before or after the main scheduled breaks.
- Bring a reusable water bottle and look for fountains or catering points for refills to stay hydrated while keeping plastic waste to a minimum.
