Discover more about Island of imagination

The Island of Imagination, or Fantasiens Ø, is a captivating historical site located within the Præstevang forest near Hillerød, Denmark. This secluded island served as a private retreat for King Frederik VII and his morganatic wife, Countess Danner, in the mid-19th century. The island's history is intertwined with the King's desire to escape the formalities of royal life at Frederiksborg Castle and immerse himself in nature. In 1859, Frederik VII commissioned the construction of a small palace on the island, designed in the romantic English garden style. The palace, built with rough granite boulders and elegant arched windows, featured a large hall and a two-story annex. The hall's ceiling was adorned with oyster shells and bottles arranged in a pattern that, when illuminated by chandeliers, created a mesmerizing starry sky effect. This whimsical design reflected the King's fascination with Nordic mythology and his desire to create a unique and enchanting space. The island's landscape was meticulously planned to represent all species of Danish trees, showcasing the country's natural diversity. A stone hill was constructed to conceal the island's toilet, while a large bowl-shaped stone, believed to be an old baptismal stone from Ebelholt Monastery, served as a water trough for horses. These carefully considered details added to the island's charm and historical significance. Following Frederik VII's death in 1863, the Island of Imagination gradually fell into disrepair. The annex was demolished in 1905, and the main building was removed in the 1960s. Today, only a granite boulder gable with pointed window arches remains, prompting visitors to use their imagination to envision the palace's former grandeur. Despite the absence of the palace, the Island of Imagination continues to attract visitors with its serene atmosphere and rich history. The island is accessible via a network of hiking trails through the Præstevang forest, offering a peaceful escape from the nearby city.
