Cirkusmuseet i Rold occupies the original winter quarters of Circus Miehe, a historic venue that represents Denmark's only preserved wooden circus building. The museum chronicles two centuries of Danish circus history, offering visitors an immersive journey through the lives of circus directors, performers, stable hands, and children who lived and worked within this unique traveling world. Rather than focusing solely on the glamour of the ring, the museum presents a comprehensive picture of circus life—one that encompassed hard work, skill development, and community alongside the applause and wonder.

Authentic Structures and Vintage Collections

The museum's physical setting is itself a primary attraction. The distinctive 12-sided wooden riding house, built over a century ago, stands as a testament to traditional circus architecture and remains fully functional. Inside the main exhibition space, visitors encounter an impressive array of original circus posters, elaborate costumes adorned with sequins and theatrical flair, vintage circus wagons, and period artifacts that illuminate the material culture of traveling performers. Two original residential wagons—one a living quarters and the other a storage wagon—provide intimate glimpses into the domestic side of circus life, complete with period furnishings and historical context about the traveling communities who called these vehicles home.

What distinguishes Cirkusmuseet i Rold from traditional museums is its emphasis on participatory experience. Visitors are invited to step beyond passive observation and engage directly with circus arts. The museum provides materials and guidance for creating personalized juggling balls, applying authentic clown makeup, and attempting classic circus tricks using freely available props and equipment. The climax of this interactive experience is the opportunity to perform in the historic riding house itself, transforming visitors into performers within the same space where professional circus artists once trained and rehearsed.

Seasonal Operations and Family Programming

The museum operates seasonally from May through September, with extended hours on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00. Beyond regular exhibitions, the museum hosts special events including circus-themed birthday celebrations where children can perform as circus artists, seasonal festivals, and themed programming such as Halloween events.
