As one of the widest beaches in Europe, Sønderstrand presents a unique landscape where the horizon seems to stretch endlessly, offering visitors a sense of boundless freedom and connection with nature. The beach's expansive sandy terrain is a haven for wind sports enthusiasts. Blokarting, also known as land sailing, is a popular activity, with participants zipping across the hard-packed sand in wind-powered carts. Kite surfing and kite flying are also common sights, as the steady coastal breezes provide ideal conditions for these exhilarating sports. Several operators offer rentals and lessons, catering to both beginners and experienced thrill-seekers. Beyond wind sports, Sønderstrand is perfect for more relaxed pursuits. The vastness of the beach allows for peaceful walks along the shoreline, where visitors can collect shells, admire the sea, and breathe in the fresh, salty air. Sunbathers can find their own secluded spot to soak up the sun, while families can enjoy building sandcastles and playing beach games. The beach is also known for its tolerant atmosphere, with nude bathing permitted in designated areas. One of the most distinctive features of Sønderstrand is that cars are allowed to drive on certain sections of the beach. This unusual practice makes it easy to transport equipment for wind sports or simply find a convenient parking spot near the water's edge. However, visitors should exercise caution and be mindful of other beachgoers, as well as the potential for soft sand and tidal changes. The history of Rømø and Sønderstrand is intertwined with the sea. For centuries, the island's inhabitants relied on fishing and seafaring for their livelihoods. In the 17th and 18th centuries, many Rømø men became commanders on whaling ships, accumulating wealth that is reflected in the island's well-preserved historic houses. The island's maritime heritage is still evident today, with the harbor of Havneby serving as a base for fishing boats and ferries to the nearby island of Sylt.
