Located a short distance south of Djibouti City, DECAN (Découvrir et Aider la Nature) Refuge provides a sanctuary for vulnerable wildlife in Djibouti. Established in 2003 by a French veterinarian, Bertrand Lafrance, the 30-hectare refuge rescues, rehabilitates, and releases animals that have been injured, orphaned, or illegally captured. DECAN actively fights against poaching and works to preserve Djibouti's unique ecosystem. The refuge is home to a diverse array of animals, including cheetahs, lions, ostriches, Somali donkeys, caracals, antelopes, kudus, zebras, porcupines, turtles, and various bird species. The animals receive individualized care in naturalistic enclosures. Many of the animals are rescued from poaching attempts. Visiting DECAN offers an inspiring glimpse into the beauty and fragility of Djibouti's natural world. DECAN also focuses on environmental education, engaging with local communities to raise awareness about protecting Djibouti's natural heritage. There are plans to expand the refuge to include a mangrove area, further enhancing its conservation efforts.
