Discover more about Fresh Water Lake

Nestled within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Freshwater Lake is Dominica's largest lake, offering visitors a serene escape into the island's lush interior. Situated at over 2,500 feet above sea level near the village of Laudat, the lake's high elevation often shrouds it in mist, adding to its mystical allure. Formed when a pyroclastic flow dammed a forested stream valley around 730 AD, Freshwater Lake is also the source of the Roseau River. The lake was expanded between 1961 and 1991 with a series of dams. Today, it serves as a vital part of Dominica's watershed and hydro-energy system. A loop trail encircles the lake, providing hikers with stunning panoramic views. The montane forest surrounding the lake features unique vegetation, including short trees, shrubs, ferns, and orchids. Birdwatchers can spot hummingbirds and the mountain whistler. Kayaking and paddle boating are popular activities on the lake's calm waters.
