Discover more about Dominica Botanical Gardens

The Dominica Botanical Gardens, affectionately known as "The Gardens," is a verdant jewel in the heart of Roseau. Established in 1891 on a former sugarcane plantation, the gardens were created to diversify crops and provide farmers with quality seedlings. Today, they stand as a testament to Dominica's commitment to preserving its biodiversity and offering a tranquil space for all. Spanning 40 acres near the Roseau River at the foot of Morne Bruce, the gardens feature a remarkable collection of plant species from around the world. Towering trees create a shaded canopy, while the air is filled with the fragrance of tropical flowers and the sounds of birds. Explore the palm collection, once considered the largest in the Western Hemisphere, and keep an eye out for the Sisserou Parrot, Dominica's national bird. The gardens are also a place of history and culture. The iconic "crushed bus," a reminder of Hurricane David's impact in 1979, remains a symbol of the island's resilience. The gardens have hosted countless cultural events, from cricket matches to independence celebrations. Jack's Walk, a historic trail, begins within the gardens and ascends to Morne Bruce, offering panoramic views of Roseau. The grounds have been visited twice by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip. Despite damage from past hurricanes, the gardens have been lovingly restored and continue to evolve. They serve as a vital green space for Roseau, offering a place for recreation, conservation research, and cultural events.
