Syndicate Nature Trail: A Rainforest Birdwatcher's Paradise

Nestled in the foothills of Morne Diablotin, Dominica's highest mountain, the Syndicate Nature Trail provides an enchanting journey into the heart of a tropical rainforest. Located within the Morne Diablotin National Park and adjacent to the Northern Forest Reserve, the trail showcases the island's rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty.Constructed in 1993 with support from the RARE Centre for Tropical Conservation and Birdlife International, the Syndicate Nature Trail and Parrot Preserve aims to provide visitors with a genuine rainforest experience. The trail is particularly noted for its loop structure, which spans approximately 1 mile (1.6 km), making it an accessible option for many visitors seeking to experience Dominica's natural landscapes.The Syndicate area is popular for bird watching as it is a bird sanctuary for some of the 51 species of local and migrant birds that may be found in the Park. The Sisserou Parrot, Dominica's national bird, and the Jaco Parrot are frequently spotted here. The trail also features a diverse array of flora, making it a key location for research and educational purposes. Interpretive signs dot the trail, providing insights into the local ecology and the medicinal properties of various plants.While the trail was temporarily closed following Hurricane Maria in 2017, it has since been reopened and continues to offer a window into Dominica's commitment to preserving its unique natural heritage.
