The park was created to protect both the cultural heritage of Fort Shirley and the surrounding environment. The park's geography is dominated by two volcanic hills, East Cabrit and West Cabrit, remnants of an ancient volcanic crater. These hills are connected to mainland Dominica by sweeping material from Douglas Bay and Prince Rupert Bay. The diverse landscapes include tropical forests, wetlands, and coral reefs.Fort Shirley, constructed in 1765 by the British, served as a military outpost to defend Dominica. The fort was expanded by the French between 1778 and 1784. It housed over 600 men and featured barracks, storage facilities, and fortified walls. In 1802, the fort was the site of a revolt by African soldiers of the 8th West India Regiment, which contributed to the emancipation of slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. The fort was abandoned in 1854 and has since undergone restoration.Visitors to Cabrits National Park can explore the well-preserved ruins of Fort Shirley, hike trails with panoramic views, and snorkel or dive in the clear waters.
