Scotts Head Bay: Where Caribbean Tranquility Meets Atlantic Majesty

Discover Scotts Head Bay: Where Dominica's dramatic beauty, vibrant marine life, and rich history converge at the Caribbean's edge.

4.8

Scotts Head Bay, cradled on the southernmost coast of Dominica, is a captivating destination where the tranquil Caribbean Sea meets the mighty Atlantic Ocean. This unique convergence creates a dramatic and unforgettable experience for visitors exploring the 'Nature Island'. Originally named Cachacrou by the indigenous Kalinago people, the peninsula was later renamed after Lieutenant Governor George Scott. In 1765, Scott oversaw the construction of a British fort, remnants of which can still be explored today, including old gun emplacements. These ruins offer a commanding view across the bay to Roseau and the channel to Martinique, evoking the area's strategic military past. The bay is part of the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve (SSMR), established in 1995 to protect the area's ecological wealth. This marine sanctuary spans 7.5 square kilometers, encompassing part of an ancient volcanic crater. Divers and snorkelers are drawn to the vibrant underwater topography, including submerged pinnacles and coral reefs teeming with marine life. A short hike to the top of the Scotts Head peninsula rewards visitors with panoramic views of Soufriere Bay, the village, and the dramatic meeting of the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day, you might even spot Martinique in the distance. Scotts Head also marks the beginning of Segment 1 of the Waitukubuli National Trail, a long-distance hiking trail that traverses the length of Dominica.
