Public Bus
From the center of Otavalo, head to the main bus terminal located at Av. 31 de Octubre and Calle Sucre. Look for buses heading towards Ibarra. The fare is usually inexpensive. Once on the bus, it's about a 30-minute ride to Ibarra. Inform the bus driver that you want to get off at Yahuarcocha. After getting off, follow the signs or ask locals for directions to the lake, which is a short walk away.
Taxi
If you prefer a more direct route, you can take a taxi. You can find taxis at various points in the city, especially near the Plaza de los Ponchos. Negotiate the fare before getting in, as it may vary. The ride to Laguna de Yahuarcocha will take approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive, make sure to confirm with the driver that they can return for you, or arrange for a pickup time.
Walking
For the adventurous, you can walk to Laguna de Yahuarcocha from Otavalo. Start at the Plaza de los Ponchos and head towards the north along Av. 31 de Octubre. After about 1.5 kilometers, you will reach the junction to Ibarra. Continue walking straight towards Yahuarcocha; this route takes you along beautiful landscapes. The total distance is approximately 5 kilometers and can take about 1-1.5 hours on foot. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated.
