Discover more about Tortuga Bay Beach

Tortuga Bay, or Bahia Tortuga, is a world-renowned beach located on the south coast of Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos archipelago. This pristine paradise is a major draw for ecotourists seeking to experience the unique beauty and wildlife of the Galapagos. The bay is named for the black sea turtles that nest along its shores. The journey to Tortuga Bay begins in Puerto Ayora, the largest town in the Galapagos. From town, a well-marked, paved trail extends for approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) through varied terrain. The path winds through an arid landscape colonized by Palo Santo trees and Opuntia cacti, offering glimpses of Galapagos Mockingbirds, Darwin's Finches, and red-throated lava lizards. The walk from Puerto Ayora to the beach takes around 30-45 minutes. Tortuga Bay is divided into two main sections: Playa Brava and Playa Mansa. Playa Brava, the first beach encountered at the end of the trail, is characterized by strong currents and crashing waves, making it ideal for surfing but unsuitable for swimming. Continuing past Playa Brava, a 20-minute walk along the beach or a path through mangroves leads to Playa Mansa, a sheltered lagoon with calm, shallow waters perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. Here, visitors can observe marine iguanas, reef sharks, sea turtles, and a variety of birdlife. Kayaks are also available for rent at Playa Mansa. Visitors should note that Tortuga Bay is a protected area within the Galapagos National Park and is open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. There is no admission fee, but all visitors must register at the park entrance. Facilities are limited, with no bathrooms, changing areas, beach umbrellas, or chairs available. It is essential to bring water, snacks, sun protection, and insect repellent. Feeding or interfering with the animals and damaging vegetation is strictly prohibited.
