Museo Los Amantes de Sumpa protects an ancient burial site dating back to the Vegas culture, one of the oldest on Ecuador's coast. The museum's name, 'The Lovers of Sumpa,' comes from the discovery of two skeletons, a man and a woman, buried in an embrace that has lasted for millennia. It is believed they were between 20 and 25 years old at the time of their death. The burial site has been dated back to 9000 BC. The museum displays over 200 skeletons and numerous artifacts from the Vegas culture, as well as more recent cultures like the Valdivia and Manteña. The museum also showcases aspects of the life of the 'Montuvia,' the traditional coastal farmers, with exhibits of traditional homes and tools. Located just off the main road in Santa Elena, the museum provides insight into the lives and customs of the peninsula's ancient inhabitants. The museum is built over the site of the cemetery, allowing visitors to connect with the history beneath their feet.
