Located in the Chimborazo province, approximately 90 km from Riobamba, these lagoons sit at an altitude of 3,788 meters (12,428 feet). The two largest and most accessible lagoons are Cubillín and Magtayán. Cubillín spans roughly 8 square kilometers, while Magtayán covers about 4 square kilometers. Cerro Achipungo, part of the Ayapungu massif, separates the waters of the Magtayan and Cubillina lagoons. The lagoons are known for their striking dark blue color and the surrounding landscape of grasslands and marshes. The average daytime temperature is around 20°C, but it can drop to 10°C at night. Visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, bird watching, and mountain biking in the area.Ozogoche is particularly famous for the annual migration of 'cuvivíes' (local name for plover birds). Every September, thousands of these birds mysteriously plunge into the icy waters of the lakes, an event known as the 'Tribute of the Birds'. The Ozogoche community celebrates this event with a festival featuring traditional music and dance. While the exact cause of this phenomenon remains unknown, local legend suggests the birds offer themselves as a tribute to the sacred lagoons. Some theories propose that the birds are exhausted from their long migration and are drawn to the water, but the sudden temperature change causes them to die.The name 'Ozogoche' comes from the Jívaro words 'ushu' (glutton eager to eat meat) and 'juchi' (to be alone), rooted in the indigenous legend of the birds sacrificing themselves.
