Discover more about Condor Machay Cascadas

Condor Machay Cascadas, or 'Condor's Nest' in Quichua, is a captivating nature preserve located near Quito, Ecuador. The area owes its name to the Andean condors that once nested on the cliffs surrounding the primary waterfall. While condors are rarely seen today, the area remains a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. The main attraction is the impressive 80-meter Condor Machay waterfall, which plunges into a pool below. The Rio Pita, fed by runoff from Cotopaxi National Park, flows through a series of chasms formed by volcanic eruptions, creating multiple smaller cascades along the trail. The well-maintained trail system allows visitors to explore the canyon, crossing the Rio Pita over a series of bridges. The hike to the main waterfall and back takes approximately 3 hours. The trail meanders through a lush landscape, featuring forests of alisos, pumamaquis, arrayanes, and cedrillo trees, as well as orchids and bromeliads. The area is home to various bird species, mammals, and amphibians. The clear waters of the Rio Pita are also home to trout. Condor Machay Cascadas offers a refreshing escape into nature, with opportunities for hiking, photography, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings.
