Discover more about Labyrinth

The Labyrinth of Faiyum, situated in Hawaret Al Maqtaa, stands as a testament to ancient Egyptian civilization. This historical landmark, known for its architectural prowess, invites visitors to explore the remnants of a culture that valued art and engineering. The intricate designs and sheer scale of the structures evoke a sense of wonder about the lives of those who inhabited this place centuries ago. Herodotus described the Labyrinth as a marvel that rivaled the pyramids, containing 3,000 rooms full of hieroglyphs and paintings. Although the structure is now in a state of partial preservation, its remnants still speak volumes about the architectural innovations and spiritual significance it held for the ancient Egyptians. Located near the Pyramid of Amenemhat III at Hawara, the Labyrinth was believed to be the main cult center of the deified pharaoh. Flinders Petrie discovered an enormous artificial stone plateau in 1889, which he interpreted as the foundation of the labyrinth. While the labyrinth itself was destroyed in antiquity, the stone base remains. In 2008, the Mataha Expedition rediscovered large parts of the labyrinth using ground-penetrating radar. Faiyum Oasis, where the Labyrinth is located, is known as the only artificial oasis in Egypt. It dates back to ancient Egypt when it was known as Shedet. The Greeks called it Crocodilopolis, and the Romans referred to it as Arsinoe. Today, Faiyum offers a blend of historical treasures, natural beauty, and vibrant urban life.
