Discover more about Pyramid of Amenemhat III at Hawara

Located southeast of the modern city of Faiyum, the Pyramid of Amenemhat III at Hawara was built during Egypt's Middle Kingdom. Constructed by Pharaoh Amenemhat III of the 12th Dynasty, the pyramid deviates from the stone construction of earlier pyramids, utilizing mud brick with a limestone casing. Originally, the pyramid stood at a height of 58 meters with a base of approximately 105 meters. Over time, the limestone casing was pillaged, leaving the mud-brick core exposed. The pyramid's substructure features an intricate system of passageways and chambers designed to deter tomb robbers. The burial chamber, constructed from a single quartzite monolith, showcases the advanced engineering of the time. The mortuary temple, once adjacent to the pyramid, was said to be an elaborate complex known as the Labyrinth. Today, the pyramid appears as a flattened, eroded mound, a shadow of its former grandeur. While the interior is currently inaccessible due to flooding, the site remains a significant archaeological location.
