The Orman Garden, one of Egypt's most famous botanical gardens, offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Giza. Established in 1875 during the reign of Khedive Ismail Pasha, it was originally intended to supply the Khedivial palaces with fruits, vegetables and citrus fruits. The word 'Orman' is Turkish for 'forest'. The garden was designed by French landscaper Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps. Covering approximately 28 acres, the garden features a diverse collection of plants, including rare species, trees, shrubs, succulents, and palms. Key features include a herbarium building, a rock garden, a rose garden, cactus gardens, and a lotus pond. The garden also hosts the annual Spring Flowers Exhibition, a cultural event showcasing a variety of plants, flowers, and gardening supplies. Visitors can explore the fragrant herbs, photograph unique palm species, and admire ornamental and aquatic plants. The garden provides a green space for families, picnics, and relaxation amidst the urban landscape.
