Spanning 1,932 meters, this bridge is more than just a means of crossing the Nile; it's a place where people gather to enjoy the city's atmosphere and take in the stunning views.The bridge connects Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo on the east bank of the river to the southern end of Gezira Island. This location places it at the center of Cairo's cultural and social life, close to the Egyptian Museum, the Cairo Opera House, and other key attractions.Built in 1931, Qasr El Nil Bridge replaced the earlier El Gezira Bridge, which had been constructed between 1869 and 1871. The original bridge was a narrow iron causeway that, while innovative for its time, soon became inadequate for Cairo's growing traffic. The current bridge was designed to include a swing section that could open to allow ships to pass. Although the bridge was designed to open, it has remained closed to river traffic since 1952.Perhaps the most recognizable feature of the Qasr El Nil Bridge is the four bronze lion statues that stand guard at its entrances. Sculpted by French artist Henri Alfred Jacquemart, these lions were initially intended for the Giza Zoo.
