Qasr El Nil Bridge, also known as Kasr El Nil Bridge, is a historic landmark in the heart of Cairo, Egypt. The bridge connects Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo on the east bank of the river to the southern end of Gezira Island. Built in 1931, Qasr El Nil Bridge replaced the earlier El Gezira Bridge, which had been constructed between 1869 and 1871. The current bridge was designed to include a swing section that could open to allow ships to pass. Although the bridge was designed to open, it has remained closed to river traffic since 1952.
