Discover more about Saint Barbara Church Complex

Located in Coptic Cairo, the Saint Barbara Church Complex is a significant landmark reflecting the area's rich Christian history. The church, dating back to the 5th or 6th century AD, stands on the eastern side of the Babylon Fortress. Originally dedicated to Abu Kir and Yohanna (Saints Cyrus and John), it later became a sanctuary for the relics of Saint Barbara. Architecturally, the church follows the basilica style, resembling the Church of Saint Sergius. It features an entrance, a narthex, a long nave, aisles, and three sanctuaries. The central sanctuary is dedicated to St. Barbara. Inside, marble columns separate the nave from the aisles, and a semi-circular choir precedes the main sanctuary. The church's design was intentionally modest to protect it from pillaging mobs. Throughout its history, the Saint Barbara Church has undergone numerous restorations, most notably in the late 11th century and early 20th century. These renovations have preserved its historical and artistic value, including unique Coptic icons, some dating back centuries. Many important monuments and items found within the church have been moved to the nearby Coptic Museum.
